The River 1.6 - Doctor Emmet Colet

This episode is cryptically called "Doctor Emmet Cole", so I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the gang find Emmet.

After she lost her father last week, Lena understandably wants to go home. Tess and Lincoln agree to go back to civilisation and then continue with the hunt for Emmet, but after Lena overhears them, she says that she can wait and they should carry on while there is still a chance of finding Emmet. Heading off to some waterfalls, they find Emmet's penknife and then Russ' backpack. Inside are videos which Clark, A.J. and Jonas (Scott Michael Foster) piece together and everyone gathers round to watch.

On board the Magus, between five and seven months ago, Russ (Lee Tergesen) and two other cameramen, Rosetta "Rabbit" Fischer (Katie Featherston) and Manny Centeno (Jose Pablo Cantillo), are waiting on Emmet. He's meditating in his room and has a bug crawl into his mouth like Lincoln did a few episodes ago. He then tries to recreate a song he heard, all the while talking into the camera and addressing Lena. She claims that she has no idea what's going on. Emmet comes out of his cabin at last and tells them that they're going on to the falls. Russ refuses and when Emmet tells him that Lena understands how important what he's doing is, the two come to blows. Again, Lena says that she doesn't know what he's talking about. Russ, Rabbit and Manny leave for the falls. On the way, he tells them about "the tribe", mythical people who were supposedly immune to sickness and disease and flay their backs to remove wings. At night, Rabbit makes a pass at Emmet, which he turns down. In the middle of the night, the three wake up to the song that Emmet heard before. When their dog goes charging out of the tent, they find a couple of dead, skinned monkeys.

The following day, Emmet speculates that it was the work of Il Tunchi, a spirit. Jahel pauses the video and tells them that Il Tunchi is a demon, not a spirit and that they should stop watching. Jonas is comforting Lena in the corridor when she admits to setting off the beacon herself, trying to get people to look for Russ. Back on the videos, Emmet tells Rabbit how he and Tess lost a one-week-old baby, which prompted him to return to travelling at her urging, crediting her with being the driving force behind The Undiscovered Country. The song starts, the trees start to move and the group runs. Manny is taken away and the two desperately search for him, finding his flayed body hanging from the trees. The song starts again, the two hide and Emmet whistles back. The song stops and Emmet says it was a test and that they passed. Rabbit is scared and he tries to convince her that it will be OK. The next morning, Rabbit has disappeared and taken most of their gear with her, leaving a note that just says "I'm sorry". Emmet soldiers on, cold, hungry and with dwindling supplies. Just as he's beginning to question himself, the dog returns (well, at least he can eat it). As for the lack of fire, Emmet chants for a bit and makes flames appear in his hands. Starving and desperate, he calls Lincoln, the last time they ever spoke.

Back on the Magus, Lena finds a symbol tattooed on the back of her neck. It's the same symbol that Emmet used to give to Lincoln, telling him that the symbol was for "the one", a special and powerful child. The group settle down to watch the final parts of the video. In it, Emmet is getting weaker and weaker, stumbling through the jungle. Trying to climb a tree to get some fruit, he breaks his ankle and abandons hopes of reaching the falls, trying just to reach the river. Conflicted, he tries to kill the dog but cannot go through with it. He apologises to Tess and the song starts again. Then, he is saved by some villagers with scars on their backs. They take him (and his cameras, conveniently) back to their village and nurse him back to health before leaving him at the edges of an outpost. The group sets off into the jungle and they find Emmet's dog and then the outpost, which is abandoned.

So they didn't find Emmet, but at least we got to see more of him and less of the group for a change. It was a pretty uneventful episode, mostly full of footage of Emmet aimlessly wandering round the jungle. Oh and they fluffed a chance to show us the only real gore of the series so far - Manny's flayed body is blurred. How lame.

5 out of 10.
